On 17 October 2024 our Environmental team secured two top spots at the 2024 Brownfield Awards. The awards recognise excellence in the redevelopment of brownfield sites. They celebrate innovative projects that transform sites into productive spaces, promoting sustainability, and community revitalisation. Typically, the awards focus on criteria such as environmental restoration, economic impact, community involvement and design quality.

The event took place in Manchester, where our team took first place and won the “Special 20th Anniversary Award for Most Significant UK Remediation or Regeneration Project”. They won this for the Avenue Coking Works in Chesterfield, once one of Europe’s most contaminated sites. The scale and complexity of the remediation work were unprecedented. By using advanced remediation techniques, our team and its partners transformed this site into a safe and vibrant space for people to live and work.

They also took the second place in the “Best Project Preparatory Work” category for the remediation of the Bowling oil terminal in Scotland, in partnership with ExxonMobil, the West Dunbartonshire Council, and WSP. Early contractor involvement allowed the team to develop a forward-thinking remediation strategy to address significant hydrocarbon contamination while aligning with client expectations and regulatory requirements.
